Boy am I glad I found this webpage! I just purchased an 86 Savage and it's my first bike. I have a million questions but I'll try to limit it to the most pressing ones. First I purchased the bike on E-Bay (real dumb move) so I took a risk as to the condition but I wasn't overly concerned as I have extensive mechanical background and I turn wrenches for a living. The bike has 9400 miles on it and appears to be somewhat taken care of. I know it was hardly run or driven the last two years and I was wondering what specific areas I should address (I've already changed the oil, plug and air filter). I don't know the intracacies of motorcycles so I was hoping for some advice on areas to look at that could throw up warning flags. I had never ridden or been on a motorcycle before but I hopped right on and tooled around the neighborhood and finally got to feel the joy you all have known. I know to ALWAYS wear a helmet and am aware of the inherent dangers of riding (I'm under no illusions as to my ability). Any advice for a first time rider or any tests I can do would be greatly appreciated. How many miles can I go on a tank? What is the Reserve for? Do I have to worry about overheating and what is the max safe continuos speed? What is the advantages/disadvantages to one big cylinder(that I really don't understand). Thanks so much for your help.........The newest Savage lover.
